Nurturing the Gift We Bring to the Care We Give

In summer 2023, Salinas Valley Health launched a new component of its Care for the Caregiver program. A full house was in attendance with standing room only for the inaugural Schwartz Rounds® session, held on September 26. The forums, which all staff (clinical and nonclinical) as well as providers are invited to attend, are held quarterly and focus on the human dimension of healthcare.

The first session, “A Patient I Will Never Forget,” was facilitated by Chief Nursing Officer Lisa Paulo, MSN/MPA, RN, CENP, and Carla Spencer, MSN, RN, NEA-BA, Director of Critical Care Services. Panelists included Kim DeSerpa, LCSW, ACM, Social Work Manager, Laurie Freed, BSN, CCRN, CSC, Intensive Care Unit, and Erica Locke, MD, Emergency Medicine Physician, each of whom related an impactful story of patient care. Audience members then offered their own stories. Those who participated in this special event shared both tears and laughter in a supportive environment that offered important perspective on what Lisa calls, “the gift we bring to the care we give.”

“Schwartz Rounds are an essential reminder that behind every patient care interaction, there is a human story,” says Carla. “They illuminate the importance of empathy, compassion and collaboration in healthcare, reminding us that healing goes beyond the physical. These sessions are an opportunity to come together to fuel our own healing and support others to do the same.”

A December forum focused on “Work and Life – Trying to Juggle It All” explored the topic of how to find harmony when dividing time between work and home life. Kimberly DeSerpa, LCSW, Social Work Manager, Case Management, facilitated the forum, and featured speakers included Alison Wilson, DO, Lead Hospitalist, Guadalupe Morales, Nurse Aide, 4th Tower/Telemetry, and Esperanza Medina Vera, Environmental Services Technician.
