From Grade School to Grad School – Hands-on Learning for Our Future Leaders in Healthcare

Salinas Valley Health is a strong proponent of hands-on education to inspire our next generation of healthcare leaders. As the field of medicine has evolved, so too have the challenges it presents. From our youngest students to those ready to work with patients, we see the great potential that comes with fresh perspectives. From technology to transformation of care in expanding cultures of access, equity and inclusion, we see the future in the faces of those we teach.

Earning Prestigious Recognition for Training Newly Graduated Nurses

Investing in the growth and development of our team is a top priority at Salinas Valley Health, and our organization has achieved prestigious recognition for training newly graduated nurses. In December 2022, the American Nurses Credentialing Center announced that our New Graduate Nurse Residency Program earned accreditation with distinction from the Practice Transition Accreditation Program (PTAP). This accreditation requires excellence in 39 standards of practice known to support new graduate nurses in transitioning into a healthcare system and to promote long-term success within the organization. PTAP accreditation is the first in our region, as is the Magnet Program Recognition® Salinas Valley Health achieved in 2021, representing a level of nursing excellence achieved by only 10% of hospitals nationwide.

Developing Essential Skills for Emergency Department Nurses

In July 2023, Salinas Valley Health invested in the Emergency Nurse Residency Program (ENRP) from the Emergency Nurses Association to augment our current program. It provides nurses new to the Emergency Department with the necessary support to be successful in an emergent care environment. ENRP is an evidence-based, hands-on training program designed to improve  decision-making skills and clinical judgment. One of the program’s many benefits is the development of strong working relationships between participants and their more experienced colleagues.

Opening Young Minds to the Field of Healthcare

The Summer Health Institute is an immersive program that gives high school juniors and seniors an inside look at the full spectrum of career opportunities in healthcare and helps them define a career path. Students work in teams to create clinical case studies and participate in community advocacy projects. One team in summer 2023 supported our Mobile Clinic’s outreach to underserved families by gathering and donating more than 3,000 new school supplies.

Health Explorers is an affiliate of Learning for Life, a division of the Boy Scouts of America. Health Explorer Post 450, sponsored by Salinas Valley Health, provides opportunities for students ages 14 to 20 to explore medical careers, network with peers who share their interest in medical science and healthcare careers, and develop leadership skills. Health professionals present educational meetings monthly throughout the school year, and participants take part in service projects and social events during the program.

Medical Adventure Camp is a unique summer experience that introduces fourth through sixth-grade students to the field of medicine and healthcare careers. The two-week camp features interactive classes and activities on multiple health-related topics led by our medical center staff and physicians.

Helping Kids Actively Manage Their Asthma. Since 1986, our impactful Mark Velcoff, MD, Asthma Camp has taught children how to take an active role in managing their own healthcare, enjoy new opportunities and build independence. Our specially trained team guides students on managing their asthma and teaches them how to participate safely in swimming, hiking and other interactive experiences.
